Ocean Kayaking

Destination: Croatan National Forest and Swansboro, NC (weather forecast, campground amenities, campground map, kayak outfitter, kayaking release form)
Departing: Friday, 10-Oct-2008 from Greystone Baptist Church. 11:30am for early group, 4:00pm for late group
Returning: Around 3pm Sunday, 12-Oct-2008
Activities: Kayaking, swimming, and rank advancement
Cost: $62.50 to kayak, $35.00 otherwise.

Pre-Trip Checklist

In preparation for this trip, please follow this checklist:

  1. Confirm your attendance with the Scoutmasters
  2. Complete, with your parent or guardian, an emergency medical treatment form, if you have not completed one or if your current one is more than one year old
  3. Have your parent or guardian sign the permission slip
  4. No later than 15-September-2008, turn in your emergency medical treatment form (if applicable), signed permission slip, and the activity fee

  5. Check the library for helpful planning information!

Details

This trip will have a half-day of kayaking the NC inter-coastal waterway, with rank advancement. Scouts will kayak in buddy groups and previous experience is not required to kayak. ASM Brian Matthews, a BSA Lifeguard, will be on-hand to oversee the kayaking.

Kayak Release Form

SPECIAL NOTICE: In addition to the usual permission slip, parents must sign the "kayaking release form" listed in the links above. If this form is not signed, you will not be able to kayak.

Directions

Take I-40: get off at Exit 373 - Magnolia. At top of exit ramp, take a left onto 24 E. Go through two stop lights, turn right, and continue on 24 E. You will go through Beulaville, Richlands, Jacksonville, and Swansboro. At intersection of 24 E and Hwy 58, take a right onto Hwy 58 and go across bridge. This leads you to Swansboro and Cedar Point and the kayak outfitters. You will also see signs for Croatan Forest where you turn right onto SR 1114, then left on FR 153-A. The whole route takes 3 to 3.5 hours. The I-40 portion is 1 hour; the rest is new 4 lane highway through to Swansboro and Ceader Point.
